Cynthia Harriel of Newport News describes herself as “kind of a fisherman.” She will have the opportunity to learn more when she takes the outdoor adventure she won in the Virginia Lottery’s Bass Pro Shops® Sweepstakes. Her non-winning ticket was one of two selected in the June 8 drawing to take the top prize.
“It floored me. It was a shock,” she told Lottery officials. “This is kind of a new experience for me.”
With six outdoor adventures to choose from, she selected a five-day Florida Trophy Redfish trip, valued at $23,000.
The other top winner of the June 8 drawing was Dennis Tate of Stafford. Two additional top-prize winners were drawn on April 20. Each of the four sweepstakes winners gets to choose one of six exciting outdoor adventures. The Virginia Lottery is also awarding more than 1,200 Bass Pro Shops® merchandise prize packs and 1,000 Bass Pro Shops® $100 gift cards in the two drawings. The two drawings attracted more than 163,000 entries.
The Bass Pro Shops® Scratcher is one of the Virginia Lottery’s most popular games. It features cash prizes ranging from $5 to $75,000.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over nearly $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
