Retired truck driver Roby Fuller of Haysi had two big days in a row. First was his 30th wedding anniversary. The next day he walked into the Virginia Lottery’s Customer Service Center in Abingdon and presented a winning ticket worth $100,000.
Mr. Fuller won the top prize in the Five Times the Money Scratcher game. He bought the winning ticket at Route 80 Mini-Mart and Car Wash, located at 2363 Sandlick Road in Birchleaf.
“I had to look at the ticket two or three times because I wanted to be sure,” he told Lottery officials when he claimed his prize. “Then I still didn’t tell anyone.”
Five Times The Money is one of dozens of Scratcher games offered by the Virginia Lottery. This is the first Five Times The Money ticket to win the $100,000 prize, which means there are four top-prize-winning tickets yet to be claimed.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over nearly $3.9 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
