July 15, 2009
Would you walk away from $52,000? Someone is perilously close to doing just that. A Win For Life ticket purchased for the January 24, 2009, drawing turned out to be a $52,000 winner. The ticket was purchased at Kroger, located at 5050 Rutgers Street in Roanoke. So far the winner has not claimed the prize. According to Virginia Lottery rules, the ticket expires after 180 days, which will occur at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 24. The winning numbers for that drawing were 1-2-13-34-35-37 and the Free Ball number was 21. The ticket matched five of the first six numbers plus the Free Ball. The owner of that ticket needs to contact the Virginia Lottery as soon as possible. By law, all Virginia Lottery unclaimed prize money goes to the state Literary Fund. The Literary Fund is used solely for educational purposes, such as school construction, renovation, and teacher retirement funding. Since its inception in 1988, the Lottery has transferred more than $176.8 million in unclaimed prizes to the Literary Fund.
The Win For Life game has been hot in Virginia lately. So far this year, three Virginia Lottery players have won the top prize of $1,000 per week for life. Another 15 tickets have won the second prize of $52,000. Win For Life drawings are held Wednesday and Saturday nights at 11:00.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
Please play responsibly.
