Barry King of Roanoke didn’t want to lose that ticket. He had a top-prize winner in the Virginia Lottery’s $100,000 Bankroll game and he needed to keep it safe until he could redeem it.
“I was scared to death of losing it,” he told Lottery officials.
So he moved it around from place to place. Eventually the ticket ended up in his sock drawer. Finally, he was able to take it to the Lottery’s Roanoke Valley Customer Service Center and claim his $100,000 top prize.
He bought the winning ticket at Garden City Grocery, located at 3735 Garden City Blvd. in Roanoke as he was driving home from work.
“I froze. I thought it was some sort of joke,” he said. “I’d never seen anything that big before.”
$100,000 Bankroll is one of dozens of Scratcher games offered by the Virginia Lottery. This is the second ticket to win $100,000 in the game, which means there is one top-prize-winning ticket yet to be claimed.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
