Douglas Knight of Newport News describes himself as a “typical working man.” But something very un-typical happened to him when he stopped for gas and decided to play the Virginia Lottery’s Bass Pro Shops® Scratcher game. He took the ticket out to his car, scratched it and discovered it was worth $75,000.
“I ran back inside and gave the clerk a big hug,” he told Lottery officials when he claimed his prize.
He bought the ticket at Super Shin Raceway, located at 3962 George Washington Highway in Yorktown.
The Bass Pro Shops® Scratcher is one of the Virginia Lottery’s most popular games. It features cash prizes ranging from $5 to $75,000. Mr. Knight is the second player to claim the top prize, which means three $75,000 tickets have yet to be claimed. Four additional Virginia Lottery players won outdoor adventures by entering non-winning tickets in the Bass Pro Shops® sweepstakes. Along with those four prizes, the Lottery awarded more than 1,200 Bass Pro Shops® merchandise prize packs and 1,000 Bass Pro Shops® $100 gift cards in two sweepstakes drawings.
Mr. Knight, who is self-employed, said he had no immediate plans for his winnings. “I’m going to be wise about it,” he said.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over nearly $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
Please play responsibly.
