Two great things happened to Lauren McNerney of Fredericksburg on the Fourth of July. First, she discovered she won $250,000 in the previous night’s Mega Millions drawing. Then, her son, who is serving in the armed forces, called from Iraq to wish her a happy holiday.
“I was crying. I was laughing,” she later told Virginia Lottery officials.
Ms. McNerney matched the first five numbers in the July 3 Mega Millions drawing. Her ticket only missed the Mega Ball number. The winning numbers were 5-6-7-11-25 and the Mega Ball was 31.
She bought the winning ticket at Fas Mart, located at 11035 Leavells Road in Fredericksburg. She used the Easy Pick function and allowed the terminal to randomly select her numbers.
Ms. McNerney was at work when she discovered she had a winning ticket. After she finished screaming, she called her fiancée with the good news.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
