It’s not every morning you wake up, run to the convenience store and walk out with a ticket worth $500,000. When William and Barbara Dunbar of Powhatan saw the $500,000 Jackpot ticket for the first time, they thought they would give it a try. They purchased a few tickets and, lo and behold, one was a top-prize winner!
“When you scratch, you never believe it will happen to you,” Mr. Dunbar later told Lottery officials. Barbara added, “It’s pretty mind boggling!”
This was the first top prize to be claimed since the $500,000 Jackpot game began on February 17, 2009. Three top prizes remain.
The winning ticket was bought at Frisby’s Food Mart, located at 2150 Anderson Highway in Powhatan. The store receives a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the ticket.
Mr. Dunbar, who works as a plumber, said he intends to put their winnings toward their retirement.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
