“Roll ’Em” Ticket Brings Home $100,000

July 17, 2009

Every morning before work, Myrtle Malcolm of Richmond visits her local Chevron. One day, while she was waiting at the register, the man in front of her bought a Virginia Lottery Roll ’Em Scratcher ticket. It caught her attention and she decided to buy one as well. When she scratched the ticket, she never thought she would win the top prize.

“I was nervous as anything,” she later told Lottery officials. “But, I can tell you I’ll continue to go back to the Chevron!”

This was the last of four top-prize-winning tickets in the Roll ’Em game, which means the game is being closed. It is the Lottery’s policy to close scratcher games as soon as the final top prize is claimed.

The winning ticket was bought at Chevron, located at 5401 Glenside Drive in Richmond.

Ms. Malcolm, who works as a teller, said she intends to use her winnings to save for retirement.

Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
