Tennessee Woman Crosses The State Line To Win Big In Virginia

August 5, 2009

Judy Slagle of Church Hill, Tennessee, likes to play Virginia Lottery games. She likes it even more now! She scratched to win the top prize of $1,000 per week for life in the Lottery’s Win For Life Scratcher game.

“You think it would be great if it happens and you can’t believe it when it does!” she told Virginia Lottery officials as she claimed her prize.

Ms. Slagle had a choice of receiving $1,000 per week for the rest of her life or a one-time cash option of $830,000. She chose the cash option.

She bought the winning ticket at State Line Market, located at Highway 23 and South Route 5 in Weber City. The store receives a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

Win For Life is one of dozens of Scratcher games currently offered by the Virginia Lottery. Ms. Slagle’s ticket is the third of five to win the top prize, which means there are two top-prize-winning tickets yet to be claimed in this Scratcher game.

Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
