When Mitchell Browning of Norton won $10 in a Virginia Lottery Scratcher game, he decided to use the money to play Mega Millions. That decision was worth $250,000. Mr. Browning’s ticket in the July 28 Mega Millions drawing matched the first five numbers to win the game’s second prize. If he had matched that last number, the Mega Ball number, he would have won a jackpot estimated at $60 million.
“I couldn’t believe it. I checked the ticket five times,” Mr. Browning told Virginia Lottery officials as he claimed his prize at the Lottery’s customer service center in Abingdon.
He bought the winning ticket at Fas Mart, located at 800 Park Avenue in Norton. The winning numbers for that drawing were 4-17-24-25-48 and the Mega Ball number was 34. He used Easy Pick, allowing the terminal to randomly select the numbers on his ticket.
Mr. Browning’s ticket was the only one in Virginia to win $250,000 in that drawing – and one of just ten nationwide.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
Please play responsibly.
