“This Is My Lucky Day!” Says Alexandria Man As He Wins $250,000

August 20, 2009

When Bartolome Pique of Alexandria looked in the newspaper and saw that his Mega Millions ticket was worth $250,000, he excitedly told his wife and daughter, “Let’s go get it!”

His ticket matched the first five numbers and only missed the Mega Ball number in the August 11 drawing. The winning numbers were 6-12-15-32-42 and the Mega Ball was 23.

He bought the ticket at Napoleon Bakery, located at 6901D Hechinger Road in Springfield, using the Easy Pick function.

When he claimed his ticket at the Virginia Lottery’s Customer Service Center in Woodbridge, he exclaimed, “This is my lucky day!”

Mr. Pique is retired from the U. S. Postal Service. His ticket was the only one in Virginia to win $250,000 in the August 11 drawing, and one of just 18 nationwide.

Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
