When Lynn Harpold of Powhatan gave her Mega Millions ticket to a store clerk to check the numbers, the clerk soon had an interesting reply.
“He told me to go home, put the ticket in a safe place and sit on the couch,” she later told Virginia Lottery officials.
That was good advice. Ms. Harpold’s ticket was a $250,000 winner. She matched the first five numbers in the August 14 Mega Millions drawing, missing only the Mega Ball number. She bought it at Stop In Food Store, located at 45 Broad Street Road in Manakin Sabot.
The winning numbers for that drawing were 8-22-25-33-35 and the Mega Ball was 46. She used Easy Pick to randomly select the numbers on her ticket.
Ms. Harpold said she intends to save and invest her winnings for the future.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
Please play responsibly.
