Randy Long of Dayton used a unique method to select the numbers on his Mega Millions ticket for the August 18 drawing. He chose numbers that he found on batteries he used in his job as a maintenance mechanic in Bridgewater.
It worked. His ticket matched the first five numbers to win Mega Millions’ second prize of $250,000.
He bought the winning ticket at Ottobine Country Store, located at 8236 Ottobine Road in Dayton. The winning numbers for that drawing were 4-5-26-37-56 and the Mega Ball was 25. His ticket was one of two in Virginia to win the $250,000 prize in that drawing, and one of 14 tickets nationwide.
Mr. Long, who also works as a farmer, told Lottery officials that he plans to use his winnings to pay bills.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
Please play responsibly.
