If Jenna Russell of Ewing hadn’t run out of gas while mowing her lawn, she probably would not have won $50,000 in the Virginia Lottery’s Bonus Word Crossword game.
When her lawnmower quit, she went to Hensley’s Quick Stop, located on Highway 58 in Rose Hill to buy gas. She also bought a Bonus Word Crossword ticket and won $3. She used that to buy another ticket. Later, at home, she scratched the ticket and discovered it was a top-prize winner.
“I never thought this would happen in a millions years!” she told Lottery officials as she claimed her prize.
Bonus Word Crossword is one of dozens of Scratcher games offered by the Virginia Lottery. This is the first ticket in the game to win the $50,000 prize, which means there are eleven top-prize-winning tickets unclaimed.
Ms. Russell, who works as a certified nursing assistant, said she hopes to use her winnings to help purchase a home.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over nearly $3.9 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
