When George Carter of West Point checked the Mega Millions ticket that he bought as part of a pool of co-workers, he saw that it matched the first five numbers and only missed the Mega Ball number.
“I felt like someone punched me in the chest,” he later said.
Then the phone calls began. He had to let all 13 of his paper mill co-workers know they won. There was just one problem: No one believed him.
But it was true. The ticket won $250,000 in the August 21 Mega Millions drawing. The winning numbers were 9-38-44-48-49 and the Mega Ball Number was 13. He bought the ticket at Pilot, located at 1503 Main Street in West Point.
Since the prize was divided 14 ways, each member of the pool received $17,857 before taxes. Along with Mr. Carter, the pool consisted of Charles Harlow of West Point, Mark Davis of West Point, Charles Daniel of New Kent, Timothy Carlton of West Point, Gregory Fulda of West Point, Jesse Mathias of Williamsburg, Glenn Wright of Mattaponi, Kevin Bull of Hardyville, Troy Foster of New Kent, Paul Feucht of West Point, Marcus Massok of West Point, Matthew Brown of James Store and Russell Johnston of West Point.
The jackpot for that drawing was an estimated $207 million. Their ticket was one of two in Virginia to win the $250,000 prize, and one of 24 nationwide.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
Please play responsibly.
