Paula McCracken of Bryans Road, Maryland, was on her way to work at a construction project on the Capital Beltway in Northern Virginia. She stopped by the 7-Eleven at 4131 Hummer Road in Annandale to get some ice as she prepared for a sweltering day operating a crane. She also bought a 5 Times the Money Scratcher ticket from the Virginia Lottery. That ticket won the top prize of $100,000.
“I think I’m in shock,” she replied when Lottery officials asked how it felt to win.
5 Times the Money is one of dozens of Scratcher games offered by the Virginia Lottery. This is the third 5 Times the Money ticket to win the $100,000 prize, which means there are two top-prize-winning tickets yet to be claimed.
Ms. McCracken said she intends to use her winnings to pay down her mortgage.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over nearly $3.9 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
