Alexandria Woman Wins $250,000 In Mega Millions

September 13, 2009

The Mega Millions jackpot was up to $170 million when Suzanne Kintley of Alexandria bought some tickets for the August 18 drawing. She had won $6 the previous week, so she might have been feeling a bit lucky. When the winning numbers were drawn, she matched the first five numbers and only missed the Mega Ball number. That was good enough to win Mega Millions’ second prize of $250,000.

“I’ve never seen a ticket with five straight numbers,” she later told Virginia Lottery officials.

The winning numbers for that drawing were 4-5-26-37-56 and the Mega Ball number was 25. She bought the winning ticket at the 7-Eleven at 7924 Fort Hunt Road in Alexandria using the Easy Pick function.

Ms. Kintley said she intends to use her winnings to pay bills. Her ticket was one of two in Virginia to win $250,000 in that drawing, and one of 14 nationwide.

Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
