Brothers’ Birthdates Are Worth $100,000

September 17, 2009

It might not seem significant that Larry Bowles of Fredericksburg and his brothers were all born in the 1950s. But by using that number 19 and adding in a few birthdates, Bowles had a Cash 5 ticket worth $100,000.

He won the top prize in the September 13, 2009, Cash 5 day drawing. The winning numbers were 4-5-6-8-19. He bought the winning ticket at the 7-Eleven at 10501 Courthouse Road in Fredericksburg.

As he claimed his prize, Bowles told Lottery officials that he’s been playing Virginia Lottery games since the introduction of the Match 3 Scratcher ticket more than 20 years ago.

“As soon as I saw the numbers in the paper, I told my wife,” said Bowles. “Then I asked one of my sons to look at the numbers to be sure I was right!” Bowles, a self-employed contractor, says he’d like to pay off some debts and help out his mother-in-law.

Cash 5 drawings are held daily at 1:59 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. The chances of winning the $100,000 top prize are 1 in 278,256.

Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $455 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 20 years, the Lottery has sold more than $20 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $10.9 billion in prizes to players.
