Hampton Woman Had No Idea What Her Ticket Was Worth (Hint: She Won The Top Prize!)

September 21, 2009

Rokina Jackson of Hampton knew she had a winning ticket. She just didn’t have any idea how much it was worth. After scratching the $5.00 Face Cards ticket at home, she took it back to the retailer the following morning. The clerk told her she needed to take the ticket to a Lottery office to collect her winnings.

“When Ms. Jackson came into our office, she knew her ticket was worth more than $600 – the maximum amount our retailers can pay,” said Keary Fox, Hampton Customer Service Center Manager. “When I scanned the ticket, I asked Ms. Jackson if she had any idea at all how much she had won.”

Ms. Jackson said, “When Mr. Fox told me I had won $100,000, I just couldn’t believe it! My stomach felt a little queasy. It was just really hard to believe.”

The ticket was bought at Beaconsdale Red Barn Food Store in Newport News. Ms. Jackson, who is a homemaker, said she intends to use her winnings to buy a car, take her five children on a trip, then put the rest in the bank.

Face Cards is one of dozens of Scratcher games offered by the Virginia Lottery. This is the fourth ticket to win $100,000 in the Face Cards game, which means there are two top-prize-winning tickets yet to be claimed.

Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $439.1 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 21 years, the Lottery has sold more than $21.1 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1.1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $11.6 billion in prizes to players.
