Hillsville Man Wins a New Corvette® Convertible

September 23, 2009

First, Dennis Roberts of Hillsville won $30 in a Virginia Lottery Scratcher game. He used that to buy a few more tickets, which won $15. Once again, he used that to buy a few more tickets. This time, he won a car.

Not just any car: a brand-new 2009 Corvette® Convertible, the marquee prize in the Virginia Lottery’s Corvette® Cash Scratcher game.

He bought the winning ticket at E-Z Stop, located at 105 West Stuart Drive in Hillsville. “I showed the ticket to the clerk and she told me I was shaking like a leaf,” he said. “I couldn’t believe it.”

On September 23, Mr. Roberts received the keys to his new ’Vette from Mark Merritt, Virginia Lottery State Customer Service Manager. The presentation took place at Jeff Johnson Chevrolet in Woodlawn.

The Corvette® Cash Scratcher game features cash prizes up to $100,000 – and a total of nine lucky winners receive the keys to a brand-new 2009 Corvette®. Six of those winners are from scratch tickets, two from non-winning tickets drawn in second chance drawings, and a ninth ’Vette was awarded during Saturday’s Virginia Tech – Nebraska football game at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg.

Those second chance drawings also included 1,410 exciting Corvette® merchandise prize packs, each including a Corvette® leather jacket, cap, sunglasses, duffel bag and key chain.

Mr. Roberts is the second of six “instant-wins,” meaning players scratch a ticket to reveal a Corvette® prize.
The odds of scratching to win a Corvette® or one of three $100,000 cash prizes are 1 in 462,400. The odds of winning any prize in the Corvette® Cash game are 1 in 4.44.

Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $439.1 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 21 years, the Lottery has sold more than $21.1 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1.1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $11.6 billion in prizes to players.
