As Sable Bell of Fort Washington, Maryland, starts graduate school, she has some unexpected tuition money. While she was working as an intern at the Department of Defense, a co-worker suggested they play Mega Millions. Ms. Bell had never played it before, but she gave it a shot. Call it beginner’s luck: She won the game’s second prize of $250,000.
“I might not be a millionaire, but this is really big!” she said as Virginia Lottery officials handed her the check.
Ms. Bell, a 2008 graduate of George Mason University, bought the winning ticket at the 7-Eleven at 3003 Columbia Pike in Arlington for the August 25 drawing. She selected numbers corresponding to her mother’s birthday.
The winning numbers for that drawing were 3-12-19-22-40 and the Mega Ball number was 2.
When asked what she intends to do with her winnings, Ms. Bell replied, “Maybe buy a new car. I’m still young.”
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $439.1 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 21 years, the Lottery has sold more than $21.1 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1.1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $11.6 billion in prizes to players.
Please play responsibly.
