As a retired math teacher, Ralph Ransom of Hampton has something in common with the Virginia Lottery. Both have an interest in education in Virginia. Now Mr. Ransom has another connection to the Lottery. He played the Lottery’s Stacks of Cash Scratcher game and won the top prize of $150,000.
It happened when he bought a few tickets at EMOC Exxon at 3102 Big Bethel Road in Yorktown and bought a few tickets. When he discovered he won, he had to wait until the next morning to claim his prize at the Lottery’s Hampton Roads Customer Service Center on Mercury Blvd.
“I’ve not been to sleep all night,” he told Lottery officials as he presented his winning ticket. “I’ll get some sleep now!”
Stacks of Cash is one of dozens of Scratcher games offered by the Virginia Lottery. This is the second ticket to win $150,000 in Stacks of Cash, which means there are eight top-prize-winning tickets yet to be claimed.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $439.1 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 21 years, the Lottery has sold more than $21.1 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1.1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $11.6 billion in prizes to players.
Please play responsibly.
