Marguerite McCauley of Leesburg and her husband had never won a big lottery prize – until the September 30 Win For Life drawing. That’s when they won $52,000.
“It’s surreal,” she told Lottery officials. “We get excited about winning two dollars, so this is unbelievable.”
Their ticket matched five of the first six numbers plus the Free Ball number. The winning numbers for that drawing were 2-4-8-14-17-21 and the Free Ball number was 42. She bought the winning ticket at Battlefield Mobil, located at 1017 Edwards Ferry Road NE in Leesburg. They selected numbers corresponding to their wedding.
Ms. McCauley said the winnings will come in handy as they plan for retirement.
Win For Life offers a top prize of $1,000 per week for the life of the winner. Drawings are held Wednesday and Saturday nights at 11:00. Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $439.1 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 21 years, the Lottery has sold more than $21.1 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1.1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $11.6 billion in prizes to players.
