Brenda Xeroteres of Roanoke won $100,000 on a lucky day. How did she know it was lucky? Her husband said so before she won.
“He said he felt lucky,” Ms. Xeroteres later told Lottery officials. “He’s normally not a lottery guy. So for him to tell me to go buy a ticket, I wasn’t going to say no.”
He was right. She matched all five numbers in the October 3 Cash 5 drawing to win the top prize.
“I was flabbergasted!” she said.
She bought the winning ticket at Kroger, located at 4404 Brambleton Avenue SW in Roanoke. She used Easy Pick and let the computers randomly select the numbers on her ticket, 9-12-20-23-30.
Cash 5 drawings are held daily at 1:59 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. The chances of winning the $100,000 top prize are 1 in 278,256.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $439.1 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 21 years, the Lottery has sold more than $21.1 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1.1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $11.6 billion in prizes to players.
