All Latrina Redden of Hampton wanted was some lip balm. She bought some from a store on Mercury Blvd. As she was driving home, she decided to stop at the Virginia Lottery Customer Service Center and play a few games. She bought a Bonus Word Crossword Scratcher from the Lottery Express machine in the lobby.
When she scratched the ticket at home, she discovered it was a $50,000 winner. “I couldn’t believe it,” she later told Virginia Lottery officials. “I said, ‘What does this mean?’”
It meant she had just become the third player to win the top prize of $50,000 in Bonus Word Crossword. There are nine unclaimed top-prize-winning tickets in this game.
The Virginia Lottery’s Hampton Roads Customer Service Center is located at 3305 West Mercury Blvd. in Hampton. It is one of six Lottery customer service centers in the Commonwealth.
Ms. Redden, who works in retail management, said the prize comes just in time for her and her husband’s 16th wedding anniversary.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $439.1 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 21 years, the Lottery has sold more than $21.1 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1.1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $11.6 billion in prizes to players.
