Deer Hunter Bags $100,000 From The Virginia Lottery

October 22, 2009

Mark Hooker of Pinnacle, North Carolina, was in Virginia to scout some land for deer hunting. He stopped by the Super C Store at 6365 Salem Highway in Stuart and bought some Virginia Lottery tickets. One of them turned out to be a $100,000 winner. Mr. Hooker didn’t know about his prize until he scratched the ticket six days later.

“I’ve never seen that big an amount!” he told Lottery officials as he claimed his prize. “I kept reading it to make sure it was true.”

The ticket was a top-prize-winner in the Virginia Lottery’s $100,000 Bankroll game.

Mr. Hooker, who works as a lab technician, said he intends to invest his winnings and pay bills.

Mr. Hooker is the third and final player to claim the top prize in $100,000 Bankroll, which means the game is being closed. It is the Lottery’s policy to close Scratcher games as soon as the final top prize is claimed.

Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $439.1 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 21 years, the Lottery has sold more than $21.1 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1.1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $11.6 billion in prizes to players.
