Imagine starting the new year by winning one million dollars. Seven Virginia residents have done just that in the past two years. On New Year’s Day 2010, the Virginia Lottery will draw three more $1 million winners in Virginia’s New Year’s Millionaire Raffle.
The game features all the excitement of a raffle, with 330,000 tickets available statewide. No additional tickets will be printed. Raffle tickets will be sold until late in the evening on December 31 – or until all the tickets are purchased. Tickets cost $20 each.
Tickets go on sale November 1 at all Virginia Lottery retailers. Winners will be announced at 2:00 p.m. on January 1. There will be 309 winners: * $1 million – three winners * $25,000 – six winners * $500 – 300 winners
With the limited number of tickets available, the chances of winning the top prize are some of the best ever: 1 in 110,000. If all 330,000 tickets are not sold, the chances of winning become even better. The chances of winning any prize are 1 in 1,068. Tickets will be numbered in descending sequential order – which means players can see how many tickets remain when they purchase their tickets.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $439.1 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 21 years, the Lottery has sold more than $21.1 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1.1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $11.6 billion in prizes to players.
