Patricia Hanger of Greenville selected the numbers on her Win For Life ticket using family birthdays. Later, when the ticket matched five of the first six numbers plus the Free Ball number in the October 3 drawing, she won the game’s second prize of $52,000.
“I was shocked!” she told Virginia Lottery officials as she claimed her prize.
The winning numbers for that drawing were 3-7-19-23-24-39 and the Free Ball number was 2. She bought the winning ticket at C-Store, located at 2653 Stuarts Draft Highway in Stuarts Draft.
Ms. Hanger, who works as a registered nurse, said she plans to use her winnings to pay bills.
Win For Life offers a top prize of $1,000 per week for the life of the winner. Drawings are held Wednesday and Saturday nights at 11:00. Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $439.1 million currently represent about 7 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 21 years, the Lottery has sold more than $21.1 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1.1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $11.6 billion in prizes to players.
