Milton Fore of Concord has seen other people win big in the Virginia Lottery. He said a co-worker won $100,000 several years ago and a friend won $100,000 last year. Now he has joined them in that exclusive group. On October 24, he matched all five numbers in the Cash 5 night drawing to win the top prize of $100,000.
“I never thought this would happen,” he told Lottery officials as he claimed his prize. “I looked at the ticket and said, ‘This can’t be right!’”
The recently retired electrician bought his winning ticket at Big Horn Market, located at 19293 Leesville Road in Lynchburg. He used Easy Pick and let the computer randomly select the numbers on his ticket, 5-9-14-23-29.
Cash 5 drawings are held daily at 1:59 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. The chances of winning the $100,000 top prize are 1 in 278,256.
Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $439.1 million currently represent about 6 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 21 years, the Lottery has sold more than $21.1 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1.1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $11.6 billion in prizes to players.
