Harrisonburg Couple Wins $250,000 Playing Mega Millions

November 5, 2009

Gary and Brenda Payne of Harrisonburg don’t play Mega Millions often, but one ticket was all it took when they won the game’s second prize of $250,000. Their ticket matched the first five numbers and only missed the Mega Ball number in the October 27 drawing.

Mr. Payne bought the ticket at the 7-Eleven at 6132 Spotswood Trail in Pen Laird. He used Easy Pick and allowed the computer to randomly select the numbers on his ticket. The winning numbers for that drawing were 7-13-37-46-51 and the Mega Ball number was 2.

Mrs. Payne, who works in retail, told Virginia Lottery officials that the couple has no immediate plans for the winnings.

Mega Millions drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

Nearly 95 cents of each dollar spent on the Virginia Lottery by players goes back to the Commonwealth in the form of contributions to education, prizes and retailer commissions. Since 1999, all Virginia Lottery profits have been designated solely to K-12 public school education in the Commonwealth. In that time, the Lottery has turned over more than $4 billion for Virginia’s public schools. The latest annual profits of $439.1 million currently represent about 7 percent of state funding for public education in Virginia. In 21 years, the Lottery has sold more than $21.1 billion in tickets, awarded more than $1.1 billion in retailer commissions and paid more than $11.6 billion in prizes to players.
